Harlequin Authors & Editors Recommend | Hispanic Heritage Month

To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs annually in the US from September 15th – October 15th, we asked our authors and editors to recommend some of their favorite books from Latino/a/x/e authors!

Harlequin Editor Natalia Castano recommends:

Cover image for Ruben Reyes Jr's There is a Rio Grande in Heaven

There Is a Rio Grande in Heaven: Stories by Ruben Reyes Jr. In this collection of short stories, the author uses themes like technology and a dystopian future setting to elaborate the analogies and ironies about the topic of immigration from Central America to the US. The stories incorporate past, present and futuristic topics all related to identity and immigration. The writing is very strong, and the futuristic stories give the book a lot of dynamic, without forgetting the political and identity undertones.

You might be surprised to find that a small town contemporary romance author like me enjoys thrillers and mysteries. My books have zero mystery to them and the only thrill is from their first kiss (not that there’s anything wrong with that.) But thrillers are some of my favorite go-to books when I’m looking for an entertaining read and a step away from my normal fare. Caridad Pineiro is one of my favorite authors, and for Hispanic Heritage Month I’m recommending the first book in her new Intrigue Crooked Pass Security series. Cliffside Kidnapping has everything I want in a thriller – tension, intrigue, danger. When the heroine’s parents are held prisoner, their techy children will rescue them, with the help of a hot FBI hero to complicate matters. As always, Caridad infuses her book with Cuban-American characters and flavor to bring you a taste of home.

Cover image for Laura Esquivel's Like Water for Chocolate

Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel is a magical reading experience. Written in monthly installments with recipes for every season, it tells of the enduring love between Tita and Pedro. Family tradition dictates that the youngest daughter must never marry, dooming Tita to care for her cruel mother until her death. But her mother’s determination to keep Tita and Pedro apart cannot stop the passion between them. This wonderful novel has it all—romance, adventure, fantastical elements and charming recipes. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend picking it up!

Harlequin Editor Allison Lyons Recommends:

Cover image for Tracy Montoya's Maximum Security

When our team asked for book recommendations, a 2004 Harlequin Intrigue novel immediately came to mind – MAXIMUM SECURITY by Tracy Montoya. The day I read the proposal, I loved it immediately and knew it would be a great fit for Harlequin Intrigue. I went directly to the line’s senior editor at the time. She agreed and we bought it. The novel won several awards and it’s as good today as it was then. I highly recommend this electrifying read.
