Summer’s in full swing, and while wedding season might look a little different this year, we can still celebrate the well-loved trope of wedding romances! Find out why we at SYTYCW love ’em!
By Katie Gowrie
As summer comes, so does wedding season. And we at SYTYCW have some mixed emotions. While the constant events, the high heels and the unavoidable strain on our wallets are exhausting, we certainly love the gorgeous bridal gowns, the floral arrangements and the open bars.
That said, we could curl up with a wedding romance in any season—on the beach at the height of summer, while drinking pumpkin spice lattes in autumn, even in the dead of winter (yes, please!). Here’s why weddings make for good romance, no matter the occasion…
Weddings bring people together! And that means the hero and heroine are sure to run into each other, whether it’s to plan, be in, or attend a wedding. Sometimes that means finding love with an old friend; sometimes it means perfect strangers learn just how well opposites attract. Either way, wedding invitations and wedding bells are rife with inciting-incident and meet-cute possibilities! These two are destined to wind up together.
Wedding venues span the scale for unique and beautiful settings. It could be a Christmas ceremony at a Lake Placid lodge or destination nuptials in Hawaii. Use that charming backdrop to add magic and romance to the reading experience.
The pressure of the big day heightens the stakes and makes room for humour, drama and chaos. There’s nothing like throwing your hero and heroine into a messy situation and watching them dig their way out. Whether it’s a best man dealing with a cold-footed groom or a wedding planner dealing with a dropped cake, it’s sure to be action (and emotion) packed!
Exes come out of the woodwork…and sometimes nosey in-laws! These romance reads come with fodder for antagonists galore—external conflict, anyone?
Weddings make us ponder our own relationships, and our own capacity to love and be loved. And sometimes that means our own insecurities about opening up or committing to another person. Along with zany external circumstances, that makes for strong internal conflict. What’s keeping your hero and heroine from taking the plunge and saying yes to love?

I spent the entire shutdown working. Had no time to wind down. I didn’t see my son much when school shutdown. My one co worker was told to stay home for 3 weeks so I picked up her hours. This year has been really crappy.
Ugh, Janell. Here’s hoping the rest of your summer is better.
Thanks for the info, Carol! Everyone is different in how they deal with the shutdown! I stay at home all the time since I don’t work so I haven’t been too effected but my shopping and errands sure have been effected!
Valri, I’ve been doing most of my shopping online. My local Target is still low on some items – mostly cleaning supplies. Grocery store is pretty much back to normal. Most of the dining in our town is outdoor. I can’t imagine have school-age kids!
Wow–getting your creative process on track must have been daunting–especially with “extra-large dog” glad to have you home. You don’t like coffee–I love coffee and have enjoyed my fortifying 2 cups in the morning even more than usual! How as COVID affected your story lines and characterizations? Best Wishes for all releases!
Interesting question, Virginia. You’ll have to tell me if the tone of my “COVID” books changed any! LOL
Life has changed so much! My dad passed Feb 2. The assisted living facility my folks were at went into hardcore lockdown the beginning of March. Mom couldn’t leave her apartment for 4 months! She was on the third floor, Will be 89 in two months & doesn’t use the phone. My husband and I remodeled the lower level completely and moved her in with us July 1. What a life change and difficult transition for the 3 of us! But we’re working thru it!
